If someone tried wrong passcodes

Your Mac made a new passcode, so the old one no longer works. What happened, and what to do.

Updated

What happened

Someone typed your Mac's ID with the wrong passcode three times. It could be a typo from someone you're helping, or a stranger guessing.

Elsewhere made a new passcode, so the one they tried stopped working. This Mac shows how many wrong tries there were, and you got a notification.

Why your Mac is safe

The right passcode only lets someone ask. Nothing starts until you click Accept on this Mac.

After a few wrong tries, each one has to wait longer, so guessing is slow. And the passcode changes after every session anyway.

What to do

  • If you're helping someone, read them the new passcode.
  • If you weren't expecting anyone, decline any request you don't recognize.
  • Share your ID and passcode only with someone you're talking to.
  • To stop requests by ID, turn off Allow connections by ID and passcode in Settings > Sharing. Your own devices still connect.
