How to control your Mac from your iPhone

Install once, sign in twice, and your Mac is a tap away. Five minutes, no network settings.

Before you start

You need two things: the computer you want to reach, and the iPhone in your hand. Both need the Elsewhere app and the same account. There is nothing to configure on your router.

1. Install on the Mac

Download Elsewhere for Mac and open it. Sign in with Apple or with your email.

The first time, macOS asks for Screen Recording and Accessibility, and Elsewhere asks once for permission to install its helper. That helper is what lets the Mac answer from the login window and from sleep.

The This Mac pane after sign-in. Sharing is on and nothing else needs touching.

2. Sign in on the iPhone

Get Elsewhere from the App Store and sign in with the same account. Your Mac is already in the list, with its status and latency next to it.

Your computers appear the moment you sign in.

3. Tap your Mac

Tap it. The connection opens in about a second, directly between the two devices.

Use your finger as a trackpad or tap straight on what you see. The modifier keys above the keyboard stay down until you lift them, so ⌘-Shift-4 works the way you expect.

When you're away from home

Nothing changes. The Mac answers from anywhere, asleep or at the login screen, as long as it has power and a network connection.

If a network blocks the direct path, the app says “relayed” so you always know.

Common questions

Does my Mac have to stay awake?

No. Turn on unattended access and Elsewhere wakes it when you connect.

Does this work on Windows too?

Yes. The steps are the same with the Windows installer.

Can anyone else see my screen?

No. The picture is encrypted on one of your devices and decrypted on the other. Nothing in between can read it, including us.
